Mitsubishi to Test i MiEV Electric Car this Fall in U.S.

Mitsubishi, which brought the latest generation of its i MiEV electric vehicles to the New York Show, have announced that the vehicles will undergo testing in North America this fall.  

On Mitsu's stand were a pair of i MiEV mini-cars -- short for Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle -- the i MiEV SPORT concept and the i MiEV Concept-cX compact SUV.  Mitsubishi's Green Plastic interior trim collection was also on display. 

We first caught a glimpse of Mitsubishi's alternative fuel engineering direction at the 2006 North American International Auto show, and saw later technological and design developments at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show.   

The standard i MiEV and i MiEV SPORT are fulltime electric vehicles that incorporate the latest high-energy density lithium ion battery technology, in-wheel motor power, and roof mounted solar panels to boost electric power generation.

Also available in the i MiEV cars is a mini turbine, driven by the air that passes through the front grille, that produces even more power, should the driver need it.  It seems all that's missing in the micro Mitsu's powertrain are two small hamsters in their respective running wheels.  

Initial real world market testing for the i MiEV electric cars began in October of 2006 in Japan, with significant assistance from some of the nation's power corporations.  Since then, officials at Mitsubishi Motors have since deemed the models ready for North American fleet testing and have plans to work in conjunction with local utilities.
